Gretel Grimm, the dark sister, had been on her morning walk when she spotted Bone Fenimore in the woods outside the Elemental. “What are you doing out here?”

“Waiting for the club to open.”

We do not open for another six hours.”

“I’ll wait.”

“You are the one they call Bone. The joker. Listen to me, joker. My sister and I do not want children hanging outside our club, especially during school hours. It attracts attention and trouble from the Bitterbrook PTA. The police already scrutinize us because this missing boy Alvin Merritt was last seen at the club. Now go back to class or I will report you to your truancy officer.”

“Truancy officer? We don’t have them in Bitterbrook. Besides, I have a right to be here.”

“No, you do not. You are on our property, and I do not want you here. If I cannot report you to the school, I will call your parents and report you to them.”

Bone waved her off. “I was just goofing on you, Gretel. Really had you going.”

“It is you who are going. We will welcome you back when we are open. Now, I wish to return to my exercise for the morning.”

“I’ll see you tonight.”

Bone got on his bike and rode to his home.

When he got there, he grabbed a sandwich and went up to his “cell,” as he had taken to calling his room after his father’s edict of a month’s restriction. After eating some lunch, he turned on his computer and logged into his Steam account. He put on his headset and clicked on the game, Troll Trashers. As the first-person actioner was loading, Bone closed his aching eyes to rest them. He heard the roar of the Troll King coming from behind the door of the throne room. “I await you in combat, peasant,” the king sneered.

Bone opened his eyes and drew his club from his weapons cart. “Savor your last moments, Troll King. For they will be few.”

Bone opened the great oaken doors of the throne room and stepped into the King’s chamber. To his delight and confusion, the throne room had become the room between the stairs. The sweet aroma of the mist slithered up his nose on smoky tendrils that wrapped around his brain. He smiled. So sweet. So powerful. The notion that he was losing his mind never crossed it.

He admired the handle of his club and saw the initials B.F. burned into it. He imagined the heft of the weapon in his hand, pressed the controls, and swung it to test its killing force.

Familiar voices called out to him. “Help us, Bone. He wants to end us.”

He saw Ashley and Lori chained to the wall at the far end of the room.

The Troll King, his head down, elbows on his knees, sat on a throne carved from the trunk of a mighty oak. A shabby fur bodice covered his muscular torso. A pair of hairy boots encased his feet and calves. He wore spiked bracelets on his wrists. The king looked up, a lunatic grin on his face.
